Got A Crummy Old Mattress? The Melrose DPW Will Recycle It Saturday Morning
Junk mattresses can be recycled for free Saturday starting at 8 a.m.

You know that ratty old mattress that’s been taking up space in your hallway? The one you used to use as a guest bed until you got a real one? That mattress you were planning on leaving by the curb on Monday?
Why not head to the Melrose DPW Operations Facility at 72 Tremont St. and have it recycled for free on Saturday morning?
You didn’t know mattresses could be recycled? Most people don’t. (We didn’t either).

Melrose Recycles points out that as much as 95 percent of materials found in mattresses are absolutely reusable. However, the overwhelming majority of mattress just wind up taking up space in landfills.
Hence, the Melrose DPW presents its second mattress recycling session on June 20, from 8 a.m. to noon, making Melrose something of an innovator in the area when it comes to mattress recycling.

“This is an excellent opportunity to cut down on waste, reduce the amount of money we’re spending to haul these mattresses, and create recycling jobs,” Ann Waitt, Assistant Director of Public Works, said in a blog post from Melrose Recycling.
