Three superintendent finalists were announced March 15, and on March 23, the school committee voted to appoint Billerica superintendent Tim Piwowar as the pending superintendent of Melrose schools. Piwowar later withdrew from the process on March 27, and is set to join Westwood schools as their next superintendent.

The Committee deliberated on April 27 and unanimously voted to approve Macero’s appointment subject to successful contract negotiations. Chair Margaret Driscoll and Macero signed a mutually agreeable contract on May 4.
Macero spent eleven years as a superintendent in two districts, prior to which he held various leadership roles including principal, director of fine arts, and teaching positions in drama, music, and English.
He brings related experience from his positions as president of the Saugus Teacher’s Association and as a school committee member in both Winthrop and Saugus.
Chair Driscoll noted that “The Committee is pleased and proud to welcome Mr. Macero to Melrose. He demonstrated broad experience, a collaborative approach to problem-solving, and care for students in his interview and materials, and we are confident that he will be a great fit for our school community. He’s already getting to know us better, having attended Melrose High School’s recent production of ‘Mean Girls.’”
Macero will join the district on July 1, 2023.
