MELROSE, MA — The city received more than $11,000 in a state grant that will bolster recycling efforts. Melrose got $11,700 of the $3.1 million the Baker-Polito administration doled out across Massachusetts this week. The money must go to recycling programs like new bins or carts, public education and outreach, collecting hard-to-recycle items, establishing recycling programs or other things. The grants are part of the state's Recycling Dividends Program, which awards money to communities that implement "policies and programs proven to maximize the reuse and recycling of materials, as well as waste reduction," a release said. Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Kathleen Theoharides said recycling programs "play a vital role in limiting our dependence on landfills and incinerators, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting economic activity across the Commonwealth."
