Melrose Police Mourn The Death Of Long-time Officer

The officer died unexpectedly earlier this week.

MELROSE, MA — The police department announced the death of an officer earlier this week.

Officer Stephen Galvin, 51, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 16 with his wife by his side. Galvin dedicated 27 years of service to the Melrose Police Department, during which he held the sought-after “Badge One,” denoting his status as the department’s most senior patrol officer.

After graduating from Melrose High School, Galvin enlisted in the United States Navy in which he served five years as a Special Officer and Equipment Manager in Alaska. After his service, he enlisted in the police academy before graduating in 1998.

Galvin was one of the original Melrose Police Honor Guard Members, the former Melrose Police Prosecutor, and enjoyed training younger officers according to the department. At the time of his death, he was serving as Secretary for both the Melrose Police Relief Corporation and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #25 Executive Board.
