Melrose Police Officers Attend Garrett Swasey's Funeral

"It was a priority for the Melrose Police Department to remember and honor his memory."

Chief Michael L. Lyle reports that four members from the Melrose Police Department’s Honor Guard flew to Colorado this morning to attended funeral services for fallen Officer Garrett Swasey.

Officer Swasey, a 44-year-old former Melrose resident, died in the line of duty on Nov. 27 at the Planned Parenthood shooting in Colorado.

Sgt. Joshua Crowley and Patrolmen William Higgins, Michael Plumer and Stephen Galvin attended the funeral for Swasey, who worked as a police officer at the University of Colorado,Colorado Springs. The services were held at New Life Church, 11025 Voyager Parkway.

The Melrose Honor Guard also participated in the procession after the funeral, which stretched five miles and followed Interstate 25 to pass by UCCS, on the way to the cemetery.

“Officer Swasey was a colleague, a former resident of this city, a husband, a father, a son, a brother and so much more,” Chief Lyle said. “It was a priority for the Melrose Police Department to remember and honor his memory and I am thankful we were able to send four representatives to Colorado today.”

Chief Lyle would like to thank JetBlue Airways for providing the Honor Guard with transportation to and from Colorado.
