Shades of Gray

by Shirley Rabb

Today is shades of gray. The sun has taken the day off, and I see a dove gray sky.

The lake is like flint and the trees across the water look like ash in the early morning mist.

My world is still. The trees and bushes near the house seem frozen in time.

There is no breeze; no wind to whip the branches about.

The movement and color is as always; the tiny goldfinches stand almost motionless at the feeders.

The chickadees, black and white stop for a seed and move swiftly to the trees.

Beautiful pair of cardinals spends time enjoying a meal of sunflower seeds, and the blue jays fly by from tree to tree.

On the ground the tiny chipmunks rush around for fallen seeds. The squirrels rarely come anymore; they have finally realized that the feeders are really squirrels free.

Only the bird’s move, as the mist becomes a shower, and the trees start to welcome the rain.

The grass has been mowed, and the green blanket from the house to the lake welcomes a walk.

It is pleasant at 67 degrees and OH yes; on the wreath at the side of the house…a robin is sitting on some eggs.

Gray really is not so bad..
