For many students, Monday marks the first day learning in class in more than seven months. Melrose Public Schools is entering the hybrid model for students in grades 2-12. (Other students have been in-person since mid-September.) The state last week reported two coronavirus cases among in-person Melrose students, but Superintendent Julie Kukenberger told Patch there was a reporting error and it was only one student.

It's officially Halloween season in Melrose. The city is sponsoring Wicked Melrose's Rise Of The Pumpkin People, where residents and businesses are encouraged to decorate with pumpkins and scarecrows.

Early voting started Saturday, when dozens of residents braved the freezing rain outside Memorial Hall to be among the city's first to cast ballots for what promises to be a historic general election. Early voting hours this week are 8:30-4 Monday-Thursday, 8:30-12:30 Friday and 2-7 Saturday. All early voting is at Memorial Hall, where people can also drop off mail-in ballots.
