Milford High School Awarded $3K For School Garden
The Whole Foods Foundation awarded the grant to MHS teacher Dr. Lexi Forgit.

MILFORD, MA —Milford Public Schools announced that one of its teachers received an award from the Whole Foods Foundation's "Whole Kids Garden Grant" program.
Dr. Lexi Forgit, a Milford High School and Pre-vocational classroom teacher, was granted $3,500 from the program. Dr. Forgit applied last year for funding to refresh and grow the courtyard garden at Milford High School.
The funding will now go toward garden supplies, like fresh soil, seeds and garden equipment, and for the construction and repair of garden beds on the upper terrace of the high school's courtyard.

Dr. Forgit and her students have maintained the garden for many years, as students help plant, care for, and pick fresh vegetables. Some of the vegetables are also used in the Milford High School cafeteria as ingredients in the salad bar or other recipes.
As part of the grant, she will also work with Tim Dowd, the high school's Building Trades teacher, to repair and replace some of the raised garden and herb beds.

“We’ve grown tomatoes, lettuce, and a variety of other vegetables, in addition to herbs like basil and dill. This year, we’ve already planted some garlic bulbs in preparation for next year’s crop. Our students love caring for the garden and seeing the development of the plants from seed to sprout to edible food. Getting outside and getting our hands dirty is a lot of fun too!” said Dr. Forgit. “Students really love seeing their hard work make it all the way to the cafeteria for staff and students to enjoy. It provides a great sense of accomplishment.”
