MILFORD, MA — The town's annual rabies vaccine clinic for dogs and cats will return in April.

The Milford Board of Health and the Milford Animal Hospital's Dr. Jonathan Augusto are cohosting the April 13 event, which will offer a first rabies vaccine shot that enables up to a year of protection for dogs and cats.

Also at the event, representatives from the Milford Town Clerk's office will be offering dog registrations.

Rabies is a serious disease that means death for any mammal that catches it and doesn't have a vaccine. It is rare, however: in 2022, two cats and no dogs tested positive for the disease in Massachusetts, according to state health officials. Raccoons, bats and skunks more commonly contracted the disease. Of the 331 possible rabies cases in 2022 in Worcester County, 16 turned out to be positive.

The rabies clinic will take place at the Milford Highway Department, 30 Front St. Dogs will be welcome from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., and cats from 2:30 to 3 p.m. The shots cost $20 per animal.
