Did You Feel That? Earthquake Moves Needham

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake that hit in Maine sent tremors around Needham and the greater Boston area Tuesday evening.

The quake occurred at about 7:20 p.m., with an epicenter about 5 kilometers west of Hollis Center, Maine, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. 

Gov. Deval Patrick sent out the following statement at about 8:42 p.m.:

Many Massachusetts residents felt the effects of an earthquake tonight. According to MEMA, which is monitoring events and has briefed me, the quake was centered some 30 miles outside of Portland, Maine. So far, we have no reports of injury or damage in Massachusetts. MEMA will continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents should use caution if they encounter any damage and take a minute to check in on neighbors, family and friends.

Twitter users around the area began talking about it shortly after the quake hit.

"L thot was a truck going by. E thot our washing machine. Good guesses, but I knew right away," one Needham resident wrote at 7:28 p.m. on Twitter.

Another local Twitter user wrote at 7:30 p.m.: "Felt it here in Needham Ma."

Needham resident Alison Borrelli responded to Patch's callout on Twitter with this tweet: "@NeedhamPatch we did! thought it was a big truck going down GPA at first."

And another person tweeted at 7:22 p.m.: "#earthquake !!! Needham rocks - literally."

The last time Patch reported on an earthquake being felt in Needham was on Aug. 23, 2011, when locals experienced the effects of 5.8-magnitude earthquake in Virginia.
