Needham High School to Compete on WGBH's High School Quiz Show

WGBH's High School Quiz Show has announced the sixteen teams from across Massachusetts to compete on the eighth season of the tournament.

From WGBH Media: WGBH’s High School Quiz Show has announced the sixteen teams from across Massachusetts to compete on the eighth season of WGBH’s televised academic tournament. More than 110 schools vied for a spot on the broadcast. The schools that received the 16 highest scores on an oral quiz at the Super Sunday qualifying event held earlier this month at WGBH’s studios in Brighton, will move on to the next phase of the competition. Among the top 16 is defending state and Governor’s Cup Champion, Lexington High School.

“The depth of knowledge that Massachusetts high school students bring to WGBH impresses me every season,” said High School Quiz Show host, Billy Costa. “High School Quiz Show is so much fun to host and to watch. I know that viewers of all ages will get into the spirit of the competition as much as I do.”

WGBH made the official announcement on the High School Quiz Show website today. The schools that will compete for the state title are:

  • Acton-Boxborough Regional High School
  • Advanced Math & Science Academy (Marlborough, MA)
  • Belmont High School
  • Bromfield School
  • Brookline High School
  • Chelmsford High School
  • Dover-Sherborn High School
  • Hingham High School
  • Lexington High School
  • Needham High School
  • Newton North High School
  • North Andover High School
  • North Quincy High School
  • Sacred Heart High School (Kingston, MA)
  • Somerville High School
  • Thayer Academy (Braintree, MA

The top 16 teams will advance to compete in the televised, single-elimination, bracketed academic tournament that will determine a state champion. The season will culminate with the Governor’s Cup Challenge, when WGBH’s High School Quiz Show state champion team takes on New Hampshire Public Television’s (NHPTV) Granite State Challenge winner for the fifth annual interstate quiz show face-off. This season’s Governor’s Cup Challenge will be hosted by WGBH at their Boston studios.

High School Quiz Show begins taping at WGBH in January in front of a studio audience. It will premiere Saturday, February 4 at 6pm on WGBH 2.
