Study Up for NEF Annual Spelling Bee

The 22nd annual NEF Spelling Bee coming this week to raise money for the Needham Education Foundation and introduce you to some new words.

 

Do you know the meaning of "samizdat"?

A team who was able to spell it last year won the Needham Education Foundation (NEF) Annual Spelling Bee. The event will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 in the Needham High School gymnasium.

(for the handful of readers not familiar with the term "samizdat," it is a Russian word meaning "disseminating censored materials.")

This is the 22nd annual spelling bee, and it features a collection of celebrity word pronouncers. This year's guests are Partner at Last Minute Productions Gary Gillis, Olin College President Richard Miller, and Lowell Spinners Announcer Mike Riley. According to a press release (see PDF), there will be 50 teams competing for the title of “Best Spelling Team of the Year.“

The NEF Bee is one of Needham’s most popular family traditions and the NEF’s biggest annual fundraiser. Special attractions include complimentary refreshments and a commemorative NEF Bee Cupcake available for purchase from Treat Cupcake Bar. 

Newly designed hats and T-shirts featuring the NEF Bee will also be available for purchase.

This year, the Bee’s lead sponsors are Needham Bank, Roche Bros., and Veryst Engineering. They are paying so you can get in for free.
