Want to Volunteer for the Pan-Mass Challenge?

If you are interested in the Pan-Mass Challenge, but not really a biker, there are other ways to help out.

Volunteer registration for the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) opened earlier this week. The PMC is an annual bike ride fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund, which has some courses running through Needham and Wellesley. In addition to riders, they need volunteers to maintain bikes, people to bring food, supplies and luggage to riders, and a number of other volunteer gigs for the course. 

This year's PMC, the 34th annual, is on Aug. 3 and 4, although they need volunteers for the whole weekend--Aug 2 through 4. 

“Volunteers of all ages are an integral part of the year-round success of the Pan-Mass Challenge,” said PMC Founder and Executive Director Billy Starr in a press release. “During PMC weekend, whether individuals are passing out registration packets or working behind the scenes to ensure cyclists have food, water and mechanical assistance their efforts matter in the fight against cancer.”

The press release also says that, with the help of over 3,200 volunteers help the PMC can keep its operating expenses low. This allows them to dedicate 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar to the cause.

Since the PMC’s inception in 1980, the event has raised $375 million for Dana Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund.  In 2012, the PMC generated 52 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue.
