[Update: 4:37 p.m.] Accident at Comm Ave & Washington in Newton Sends 3 to Hospital

Newton Fire Department says "Jaws of Life" used to extricate at least one person.

It happened right in front of them.

Newton firefighters saw a car go the wrong way down a one-way street, yelled at the driver to turn around, and then watched as two cars collided Wednesday afternoon near the corner of Commonwealth Aveneue and Washington Street in Newton.

Firefighter Mark Rizza from Station 2, located at 1750 Comm Ave., said they radioed in the accident to central dispatch, which then flagged police and ambulances.

Meantime, Rizza said Engine 2 and Ladder 1 from Station 2 rushed to the scene right outside, using the "Jaws of Life" from Ladder 1 to pull a man and woman from the car. Their car was hit by an older woman who had missed the one-way split on Commonwealth Avenue and drove westbound in the eastbound lane, running the red light because the light can't be seen from that direction.

Newton Police say two people were transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital, and a third was taken to . Rizza said he did not know the condition of any of the three.

[Posted earlier} A two-car accident at at Commonwealth Avenue and Washington Street in Newton was called in as a rollover at 2:23 p.m. Newton Police say two people were transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital, and a third was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

The Newton Fire Department says the "Jaws of Life" was used to take out at least one person from the wreck.

The wreckage has now been cleared from the scene.
