Belmont World Film’s 22nd Family Festival presented by the German International School Boston concludes on Sunday, January 26, at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, with three films about reclaiming green spaces and caring for the environment. The festival annually screens some of the world’s most imaginative live action and animated films for and about children aged 3-12—films that can’t be seen anywhere else in the US or online.

Films this year include multicultural casts representing five different continents. For young viewers, subtitles will be read aloud through headphones, much like being read a story. Films screening on Sunday include:

  • Sauvages (Switzerland, France, Belgium): Oscar-winning director Claude Barras (My Life as a Zucchini) presents another remarkable clay animation tale about Kéria, a young girl living in Borneo, who cares for a rescued baby orangutan. Joined by her cousin Selaï, seeking refuge from the conflict between his nomadic family and the logging companies, they strive to protect their endangered ancestral forest. Age 5-12+. Content advisory: suggestion of danger may be scary for some children. (12:15 PM)
  • Curious Tobi and the Treasure Hunt to the Flying Rivers (Germany): Travel around the worldwithout leaving home in this captivating film that spans Germany, Vietnam, Mongolia, and the Amazon rainforest to solve the riddle found inside a mysterious treasure chest. The extremely entertaining story line also addresses urgent ecological issues in a child-friendly way. Age 8+ (2:00 PM)
  • Block 5 (Slovenia): A heartfelt story of kids discovering the power of standing up for their values! A determined 12-year-old girl fights to honor her late mother’s legacy by protecting the environment. When a local skateboarding crew bullies her, she must find a way to unite them with her mission to save their shared playground. Age 10+. Content advisory: swearing, bullying, illegal activities.
