Boston College New Hire: Defensive Backs Coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim

NEWTON, MA — After Boston College's head football coach announced that former UMass football staffer will be part Boston College's football team staff this season, the hire is creating a buzz in the college sports world.

Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, 43, will be the defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator this season at BC this season, the school announced Thursday. According to the school, he's known for his ability to recruit high talent, making him a valuable hire.

"Aazaar is one of the top recruiters in college football and will be a tremendous addition to our program," Hafley said in a statement. "Aazaar is what we are all about: he has high character and is someone who loves people. We are excited to add a great football coach like Aazaar to our BC football family."

The Washington, D.C., native is regarded for his coaching acumen and established ability to evaluate and recruit.

Abdul-Rahim has experience at the high school and collegiate levels, including Alabama and Maryland. Prior to UMass, Abdul-Rahim spent the three seasons at Maryland and before that Alabama.

In each of those schools he helped strengthen the teams and bring all-conference recognition to players he helped recruit. He was recognized by 247Sports in 2018 as one of the top recruiting assistant coaches in the Big Ten. In 2017, 247Sports recognized him as one of the top 25 recruiters nationally for the class of 2017. And during his two seasons at Alabama, the team was selected for the College Football Playoffs in both years and won the national championship during 2015.

Abdul-Rahim hails from Washington, D.C. where he founded the a football program at Friendship Collegiate Academy and then proceeded to rack up 62 wins during his tenure while he also led the team to a District of Columbia State Athletic Association championship in 2012. He has also helped more than 100 players earn scholarships to play college football, according to BC.

Abdul-Rahim is also the founder of a defensive back training academy called "Cover One," that works with NFL players on skill development.
