A Newton family was killed after being exposed to the gas in New Hampshire.
NEWTON, MA — The New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s Office has identified the cause of the carbon monoxide leak that killed a Newton family of four on Dec. 23, according to a report from Boston 25 News.
Fire Marshal Sean Toomey said the propane gas home heating system at the Goldstein family’s Wakefield, New Hampshire vacation home malfunctioned, causing damage to its ventilation system, causing the leak.
Matthew Goldstein, 52, Lyla Goldstein, 54, Valerie Goldstein, 22, and Violet Goldstein, 19, were found dead on Christmas Day. Matthew Goldstein was an eighth grade science teacher at Brookline’s Baker School. Leaders from the district expressed how significant the loss will be to their community.
