Newton Mayor to Join Subway's Jared Fogle to Promote Health & Wellness

Mayor Setti Warren will join Subway spokesman Jared Fogle Wednesday, March 14, to help promote health and wellness in the Newton community.

Fogle, who founded the Jared Foundation, will be announcing a partnership with the JCC Association to help combat childhood obesity.

According to a press release issued by Warren's office, the city has taken a number of steps to improve the health and wellness of Newton residents. Some of those steps include:

  • The city has received a Safe Schools Healthy Students grant, providing new equipment and activities in gym class; healthy eating has been incorporated into wellness classes in our public schools
  • The city has received a grant to extend wellness activities into after school and summer programs
  • Joining First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move program, to help us track how we are doing and make fighting childhood obesity a priority
  • Partnering with Newton Wellesley Hospital to launch the FiVi portal on the city website, which provides eating and exercise advice at no cost to residents and employees, and allows users to track their health goals
  • The Health and Human Services Department will soon begin holding healthy eating workshops for firefighters in each of our fire stations.
