Perceptions of Islam in America: 10 Years After 9/11

From Lasell College:

The presentation, which will take place in DeWitt Hall, will include three professors of diverse backgrounds speaking about 9/11 and its implications. Each speaker will bring their unique perspective to the table. The presentation aims to leave the Lasell community engaged in a conversation about 9/11.

The speakers at Friday’s event will include Dana Janbek, a Jordanian born communications professor who will discuss her experience with Muslim and Arab stereotypes in the U.S. media. English professor Salam Mir, born in the Middle East, will present a unique look at the perceptions of Muslims and Arabs in the U.S. while History professor Joseph Aieta will also speak about 9/11 and the consequences the country still faces today.

Thomas Sullivan, the director of Lasell’s Center for Spiritual Life, hopes the event will open the door to candid conversations in Lasell’s community. Sullivan hopes this open forum on Friday will lead to discussions about terrorism, stereotypes, and religion.

Sullivan says “it is important to start a conversation about 9/11 and to commemorate those who were lost and to start and open conversation about religion”.
