FedEx Package Thief on the Loose in Newton

A woman caught the thief on camera and police are now looking for a suspect based on a description of the man's car.

Newton residents expecting deliveries may want to contact their delivery service to keep packages from sitting unattended in doorways. There’s a package thief on the loose in Newton.

A Newton woman who lives on Dalton Road reported a stolen package to police Thursday, Feb. 19.

She said she got home around 6 p.m. Thursday night and noticed that a package she had been expecting was not sitting on her front porch. She reviewed her surveillance footage and noticed that FedEx dropped off the package about an hour and a half before she got home, at 4:30 p.m.

The footage later shows a man in a black sedan driving past her home and then backing up and pulling into the street. The man then leaves his car, runs across the street and grabs the woman’s package before running back to his car.

Police captured an image of the man’s car from the surveillance footage, but said the video is not close enough to make out his registration.

Police said the car looks to be a dark-colored Volkswagen Jetta, either black or green, with a roof rack for bikes.
