Five Things You Need to Know Today: May 4
Taiwan Day, concerts and a mattress sale at Newton North.

1. Yard sales. There are quite a few yard sales scheduled for today in Newton, including the Bowen Cooperative Yard Sale at St. John's Church in Newtonville. Check our events calendar for more yard/estate sales happening today!
2. Taiwan Day. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO-Boston) and the local Taiwanese community will host a Taiwan Day today at the Hyde Community Center in Newton Highlands. The free event runs noon - 4 p.m. and includes arts and crafts, performances, food, music and more.
3. Music at the Jackson Homestead. The Jackson Homestead & Museum will host a special program of classical guitar music this afternoon in honor of Cinco de Mayo. The performance will feature Zaira Meneses, faculty at the New England Conservatory, and New England Conservatory students studying under renowned guitarist Eliot Fisk. The free concert starts at 3 p.m. It's also community weekend at the museum, so Newton residents can check out the exhibits for free!

4. Need a mattress? The Newton North tennis and lacrosse teams will host a mattress sale today in the SOA (simulated outdoor arena) at Newton North. Proceeds from the one-day sale, which runs from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., will benefit the two sports teams. Mattresses are at a discounted rate and come with factory warranties.
5. Concert to benefit The One Fund. Carriage House Violins in Upper Falls will host the Arneis Quartet for a concert this evening at 7:30 p.m. The show will feature works by Haydn, Schulhoff and Beethoven. Tickets are $20 and 100 percent of the proceeds from the concert will benefit The One Fund, a charity helping the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.
