Five Things You Need to Know Today: May 7

A birthday celebration, the Riverside Station discussion continues and Mayor Warren hosts a grand opening for the new Veterans Service Center.

1. Veterans Center grand opening. Mayor Setti Warren will host a grand opening celebration tonight for the new Veterans Service Center at American Legion Post 440 in Newton. The event will include Boston Celtics and New England Patriots players, comedians, food and more. The free event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and patrons are encouraged to bring donations for The One Fund.

2. Blacker's Bakeshop fifth birthday celebration. Blacker's Bake Shop on Comm. Ave. is celebrating its fifth birthday! Starting today, there will be balloons, free birthday cake and free cookies at Blacker's. Spend at least $5 and get one of their small chocolate chip loaves free (while supplies last). Happy Birthday, Blacker's!

3. Riverside Station discussion continues. The Board of Aldermen's Land Use Committee will continue its discussion tonight on the proposed Riverside Station development at the MBTA site off Grove Street. The committee is holding several working sessions before voting on the project permits. Tonight's meeting will be held in room 222 at City Hall and starts at 7 p.m.

4. Indoor Farmers' Market. The Newton Indoor Farmers' Market will be open today at the Hyde Community Center from 1:30 p.m. - 6 p.m.

5. Teacher Appreciation Week. This week is teacher appreciation week and today is Teacher Appreciation Day. Although the Newton Public Schools has a policy against teacher gifts, there are plenty of ways to let teachers know how much you appreciate what they do. A simple note or card is always welcome, or a handmade craft from a student. Parents can also donate books to school libraries in honor of a favorite teacher or a donation can be made in a teacher's name to the Newton Schools Foundation (NSF). The NSF's "Honor Thy Teacher" campaign is going on right now.
