McMains Named Newton Police Chief
After serving in the role on an interim basis, George McMains was appointed full-time police chief.

NEWTON, MA — George McMains has been appointed as Newton’s newest police chief by Mayor Ruthanne Fuller.
McMains first joined Newton PD in 1997 after a decorated career in the Marines, where he served in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. In 2022, McMains was appointed Superintendent of Police, which is the second-highest position under chief.

“George McMains has just the right skills, experience, temperament, judgment and work ethic that our community and our police department need at this time,” Fuller said. “George is dedicated to fostering a community-oriented police department that prioritizes the quality of life for all residents. He believes in delivering policing that is fair, just, respectful, safe, and effective.”
Fuller also commended McMains for how he performed in and adapted to the role of acting chief.
In addition to Fuller, a Police Selection Committee consisting of 10 other individuals of various backgrounds were involved in the appointment of the new chief. According to Fuller, they unanimously endorsed McMains.
“He is open and respectful of different viewpoints and opinions. I have seen firsthand that in times of crisis, confusion and controversy, he is calm, decisive and thoughtful. He has good judgment,” Fuller said about McMains He is mature. He is respected and liked by the officers and staff within the Newton Police Department.
