NEWTON, MA — The city broke ground this week on a stormwater storage project on Cheesecake Brook by Albemarle Field.

According to the Charles River Watershed Association, the brook struggles with poor water quality and frequent stormwater flooding.

Excavation is slated to begin soon, where the subsurface storage system will be implemented. This system is designed to redirect and store 100% of the stormwater runoff generated by a six acre neighborhood. The infiltration system resembles a series of tanks sandwiched between layers of gravel, and has a volume of nearly 50,000 cubic feet, meaning it can store enough stormwater to fill more than half of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The CWRA anticipates the system to be fully installed before the end of August. Following that phase, plants will be placed on the mowed turf and filter turrets that will spread runoff water to the plants so they can absorb it.
