Newton Cancels School For Friday As Storm Looms

NEWTON, MA — Newton Public Schools students will get an early start to their holiday vacation Friday thanks to the region’s looming winter storm, school officials announced on Thursday.

Officials made the call to cancel school around 4 p.m. The closure on Friday also impacts all after school and evening activities, officials said.

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate through Thursday evening into the overnight hours. This storm likely won’t bring snow in Eastern Massachusetts, according to forecasts from the National Weather Service.

Torrential rain and damaging winds could still cause power outages, though, while also making travel difficult throughout the region.

Wind gusts around Boston could top out over 50 miles-per-hour, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is forecast to taper off on Friday.

Plunging temperatures, though, could then slicken roadways and other surfaces toward the end of the day Friday, with gusty winds adding subzero wind chills in some locations, according to the National Weather Service.
