Newton Celebrates Its Newly-promoted Officers
George Mcmains was officially announced as the city's newest police chief along with multiple other promotions.

NEWTON, MA — Community members gathered at City Hall Thursday afternoon for a Police Oath of Office Ceremony that officially celebrated the promotion of George McMains to Police Chief.
McMains took over as acting chief when former chief John Carmichael took a leave of absence last year.Carmichael stepped down from the position in September citing his health, family, and other opportunities as reasons he did so. McMains now becomes the 20th person to hold the position in the city’s history.
Mayor Ruthanne Fuller spoke highly of McMains during the event, as well as Dennis Dowling, Kenneth Dangleo, Joseph Brooks, and Michael Gaudet who were promoted to the positions of Superintendent, Captain, Lieutenant, and Sargent respectively.

“Along with Chief McMains 28 years of service to NPD, these officers altogether bring 119 years of experience to the department,” Fuller said.
McMains first joined Newton PD in 1997 after a decorated career in the Marines, where he served in Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield. In 2022, McMains was appointed Superintendent of Police, which is the second-highest position under chief.
