Newton City Council To Elect 2020 President

Council President Marc Laredo, who has been president for two years, will stand for reelection. Susan Albright of Ward 2 is also running.

NEWTON, MA — City councilors and city councilors-elect will choose a president for the 2020 council Thursday in a caucus.

The City Council, Newton's legislative branch of municipal government, is made up of 24 members - 16 at-large Councilors and eight Ward Councilors. Councilors are elected every two years.

The newly elected and returning Newton City Councilors that will take office on Jan. 1 will elect its president, vice president and president emeritus in a (See docket here). The two people the new council chooses will become confirmed on Jan. 1.

Ward 2 At Large Councilor Susan Albright and Marc Laredo, who has been president for the past two years, have expressed interest in being president to their fellow councilors. And the two who have expressed interest in running for vice president: David Kalis and Rick Lipof.

On Thursday night the newly elected city councilors will hold two votes. First they'll elect a president and then they'll take another vote for vice president. Simple enough, but it's been known to be an exciting night in the past, according to officials.

The council president appoints the chairs, vice chairs and members of the council’s committees and runs the city council meetings.
