Newton Lake Closed Due To Dangerous Algae
The city's Health and Human Services Department has restricted access and advised residents.

NEWTON, MA — The city announced that Crystal Lake has been closed for swimming due to the presence of dangerous algae.
Blue-green algae, known as cyanobacteria, produces toxins that are a health risk to both people and animals. If exposed, people can experience skin and eye irritation, as well as respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses. Dogs are especially at risk, and consuming the water could be fatal. Symptoms of exposure include vomiting, drooling, and seizures.
The lake’s algae levels will be continuously monitored by the Newton Health and Human Services. Boating on the lake has also been prohibited while the algae is present.
