Newton Lake Reopens After Bacteria-related Closure
Crystal Lake was temporarily closed earlier this month due to the presence of dangerous algae.

NEWTON, MA — Crystal Lake has reopened after acceptable bacterial test results.
The lake, located off Rogers Street, was closed on Wednesday, Aug. 6 after the presence of dangerous blue-green algae was discovered. Also known as cyanobacteria, the algae produces toxins that are a health risk to both people and animals. Crystal Lake was then tested twice one week apart with samples taken from Cronin’s Cove and the beach area. Both results came in well below the dangerous level of 70,000 cells per milliliter benchmark set by the state’s public health department.
Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced that full recreational use of the lake can be resumed, despite the summer swimming program having already concluded.
