Newton Override Vote by the Numbers

A few pieces of quick-hit information from yesterday's special election in Newton.

The three override questions that were decided in Tuesday's special municipal election included an $8.4 million operating override and two debt exclusion overrides for the rebuilding of Angier and Cabot elementary schools.

Now that the numbers are in, here are a few items of note from yesterday's election:

  • Question 1, the $8.4 million operating override, received the largest number of "no" votes. However, the question still passed by 1,450 votes (9,649 "yes" to 8,199 "no") or roughly 54 percent.
  • Question 2, the debt exclusion for Angier Elementary, passed by the largest margin of 2,011 votes (9,904 "yes" to 7,893 "no"), or roughly 54 percent.
  • Question 3, the debt exclusion for Cabot Elementary, passed by 1,960 votes (9,879 "yes" to 7,919 "no"), or roughly 55 percent.
  • Question 2 had the highest number of blank votes at 85. Question 3 had 83 blank votes and Question 1 had 32 blank votes.
  • While the city voted "yes" overall, several wards/precincts had a majority of "no" votes, including Ward 1, Precinct 1 (1-1), 1-4, 3-3, 3-4, 7-1 and all of Ward 8. Several precincts had very close numbers between the "yes" and "no," including 4-4, 5-1 and 7-3. 
  • Thirty-two percent of Newton's registered voters turned out for yesterday's special election. This amounts to 17,882 voters of a total 55,412 registered. By contrast, 47 percent voted in the 2008 override election and 79 percent voted in the November presidential election.
  • The award for the highest turnout goes to 2-3, 5-3 and 5-4. All three of those precincts had 41 percent turnout.
  • The city's lowest turnout, 10 percent, was in 7-3, which is also one of the smallest precincts in the city.
