Police Log: Drunk Driver Found with 8 Open Containers; Shoplifting; Vandalism

Shoplifting incident at Chestnut Hill Star Market

Newton Police responded to the Chestnut Hill Star Market on April 4 for a shoplifting incident.

The incident involved a 46-year-old West Roxbury man who ordered seafood and then proceeded to leave the store without paying. He was given a no trespassing order and police are seeking criminal complaints against him for the theft of a florentine pinwheel and four lobsters.

Newton man allegedly found drunk inside courthouse

Newton Police responded to Newton District Court on April 5 for reports of an intoxicated man in the court lobby.

According to reports, the man was seated in a chair in the lobby and had bloodshot eyes, "mumbled" speech and was unsteady on his feet. He also smelled strongly of alcohol, reports said. 

Police initially put the man in protective custody and then found he was wanted on default warrants out of Newton. 

Charles Busuito Jr., 47, of 51 Nathan Road, Waltham, was arrested on a warrant for breaking and entering in the nighttime for a felony, larceny under $250 and credit card misuse, police said. 

Break-in on Parker Avenue

Police responded to Parker Avenue on April 5 after a resident reported a past breaking and entering. 

According to police reports, the resident said she left for work around 8:15 a.m. and when she returned around 3:50 p.m., she noticed her sunroom's back door was open. The only item that appeared to be missing was an iPad, which was stolen from the sunroom.

Shoplifting on Lincoln Street

Newton Police responded to a shop on Lincoln Street on April 5 after employees reported a woman had stolen a tan VBH handbag.

According to reports, the suspect entered the store, browsed briefly, and then left. After the woman left, the employees noticed a handbag was missing from the display and checked the security video. On the video, the woman was seen hiding the bag under her coat before leaving the store.

As a result, police have issued a no trespassing order against the 60-year-old Newton woman and she will have to appear in court for charges of shoplifting and larceny over $250, police said.

A Homer Street resident told police on April 6 that someone had vandalized his lawn the night before.

According to reports, the man went to sleep around 11 p.m. on April 5 and when he got up around 6 a.m. the next day, he noticed two holes and tire tracks in his front lawn.

Police said it appeared that a vehicle traveling west on Homer Street crossed over the center line, went up on the curb and onto the lawn. The two holes were likely left when the vehicle spun its tires trying to get off the lawn. 

Destruction of property

A Newton man was arrested on April 6 after police responded to Chase Street for reports of a disturbance. 

Joseph German, 19, of 8 Bartlett Terrace was arrested and charged with wanton and malicious destruction of property, police said. 

Tools stolen from home under construction

Police responded to a home on Boylston Street on April 6 for reports of a past breaking and entering.

According to reports, several tools were stolen from the home, which is under construction. The theft happened sometime between 4:30 p.m. April 5 and 12:45 p.m. April 6. 

The stolen tools include a sliding compound saw, four finishing nail guns, a Milwaukee saw-zall, a belt sander, a router table, a Dremmel tool, a jig saw, two roto zips, a laser level and two other levels. 

Man drives drunk, crashes into parked cars, falls asleep

A Waltham man was arrested in the early morning hours of April 7 after he allegedly drove under the influence and crashed into parked cars.

According to reports, police responded to Mague Avenue just after midnight on April 7 for reports of a drunk person in the driveway. When police arrived on scene, they found a driver asleep at the wheel of a black GMC Yukon.

Police said it appeared as though the driver veered off Mague Avenue and crashed into several cars parked in a driveway. 

When police found the sleeping driver, the car was allegedly still running and in drive.

Once the driver woke up, police said he had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol. 

As a result, Angel Ledesma Fuerte, 30, of 7 Pine St., was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (third offense), marked lanes violation and eight counts of open containers, police said.

Car break-ins

  • April 4, Pearl Street - Sometime between 10 p.m. April 2 and 8 a.m. April 3, someone entered an unlocked Buick.
  • April 4, Elmwood Street - Sometime between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., someone broke into an unlocked Ford Edge parked in a driveway.
  • April 5, Jackson Street - Police responded for a report of a vehicle break-in; no additional details provided.

Stolen license plate

A man came in to Newton Police Headquarters on April 7 to report that his rear license plate was stolen while it was parked at the Barry Price Rehab Center on Border Street.

According to reports, the theft happened sometime between noon and 7:30 p.m.

Items stolen from gym locker room

A woman told police on April 8 that someone stole money from her wallet while she was working out at the Boston Sports Club on Wells Avenue.

According to reports, the woman left the wallet in her purse, which was in an unlocked locker in the women's locker room. The theft happened sometime between noon and 1:30 p.m.

Warrant arrest

A Newton man was arrested on April 8 on a warrant out of Newton District Court, reports said. 

Jonathan J. Payne, 22, of 165 Christina St., was arrested on a warrant for malicious destruction of property over $250, police said. 

Break-in suspect charged - Updated 4/17/13, 4 p.m.

Police responded to Perregrine Road on around 4:45 a.m. April 9 after a resident reported a suspicious person. 

According to reports, the resident told police he heard a loud noise in his driveway and when he looked out the window, he spotted a person wearing dark clothing leaving his driveway on a bicycle. 

The next day, an officer was dispached to Hartman Road to speak with a resident whose car was broken into. One of the stolen items from the car included an iPhone. 

When the resident called the iPhone, a Newton Police officer picked up and stated that the phone was found on a man who was taken into protective custody the night before and found with several stolen items.

As a result, Omar Jamal Ridley, 35, of 100 Geneva Ave. #1, Dorchester, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering a car and receiving stolen property over $250, police said.
