Newton Psychologist Pleads Guilty To Fraud And Money Laundering Charges
The elderly man reportedly spent money illegally on an internet love scam he fell victim to.
NEWTON, MA — A psychologist has agreed to plead guilty in federal court on multiple fraud charges, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
Eric Brown, 76, was charged with two counts of wire fraud and one count of engaging in an unlawful money transaction. The charges stem from when a patient of Brown asked him to serve as the trustee of a $700,000 trust that the patient got from the settlement of a motor vehicle accident the patient was the victim of. Brown was reportedly supposed to use the funds solely for the benefit of the patient, however he invested approximately $600,000 of it overseas after falling victim to an internet scam. Brown believed he was in an online relationship with the scammer.
Brown then deceived a family member into lending him $310,000 under false pretenses, which he also used to send to the scammer he was being fooled by. Brown reportedly claimed he needed the money to make renovations to his office building.
