Bands of heavy snow will contnue through this afternoon, the NWS says.
10:18 a.m.:
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning is still in effect for the Newton area until 1 p.m. Friday. Estimated snow accumulation is between 6-10 inches, NWS says.
As the snow tapers off this afternoon, precipiation may turn to rain briefly. The snow/rain will likely end before 7 p.m., NWS says.

A snow emergency will be in effect in Newton as of 6:45 a.m. Friday, March 8, according to a post on the city's website.
During a snow emergency, all cars must be parked off the street and out of municipal lots. Cars left in lots and on the street will be ticketed and towed.
In addition, the Newton Public Schools will be closed today, March 8, due to the weather.
The district's Education Center and preschool are also closed today. Before and after school programs are canceled.

Newton's Mount Alvernia High School, Newton Country Day School, Solomon Schechter Day School and Jackson and Walnut Park Schools are also closed.
As for colleges, Lasell College will have a delayed opening today. All offices will open at 10 a.m. and all classes scheduled for 10 a.m. and later will take place as scheduled.
Trash and recycling pickup in the city is on schedule today.
Any snow-related service issues can be called into the city at 617-796-1000 or filed online through the 311 system. Report all emergencies to 911.
