Newton Ranked as America's Seventh Highest-Earning City

More than half of the households in Newton earn more than $100,000 a year.

Newton is the seventh highest-earning city in the country and one of only 16 U.S. cities where more than half the households earn more than $100,000 a year, according to a recent report from NerdWallet.

The San Francisco-based NerdWallet compiled census data to create the list, focusing on the country's largest cities and metro areas. 

The NerdWallet report says 55.4 percent of Newton households earn more than $100,000 a year, with 25.7 percent of those households earning more than $200,000 a year.

Newton was the only Massachusetts city to make the list, with most of the other high-earning cities based in California or Texas.

The top-ranked city on the NerdWallet list is San Ramon, Calf., where 63.5 percent of households earn more than $100,000 a year.
