NEWTON, MA — Newton's winter overnight parking ban will go back into effect from Thursday, Dec. 1 through Friday, March 31, Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said in an update Thursday,

During the four-month parking ban, parking on city streets is prohibited from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Although Fuller was able to override the ban during the pandemic and has heard from many residents who find the parking ban challenging, she said any permanent changes to the ban now need City Council approval.

"The COVID-19 State of Emergency ended in June 2021, so my ability as Mayor to lift the ban wasn’t an option last winter or now,” Fuller said. Any permanent changes to the parking ban need to be decided the City Council. I know the City Council continues to consider what changes may be appropriate. Council President Susan Albright and Councilor Andrea Kelley recently put forward a docket item for the full Council to discuss modifying the Overnight Parking Ban to help alleviate the burden on residents without a place to park their car during the winter.”

In the meantime, residents who are looking for a place to park their cars from 7 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the parking ban can get a free municipal parking lot sticker from the Newton Police Department. Permits are given out on a first-come first-serve basis and applicants must bring a valid driver's license and vehicle registration.
