Newton South Booster Club To Host Inaugural Lions 5K

The event on Sunday, May 15 will support Newton South High School athletics.

NEWTON, MA — The Newton South High School Booster Club will host its inaugural Lions 5K road race on Sunday, May 15 at 9:00 a.m.

The event, which will feature nearly 300 runners, will support the Booster Club’s mission of promoting school and community spirit and raise money for the athletic programs of Newton South High School, home of the Lions.

The race, which starts and finishes at Newton South High School, is open to the public and to runners and walkers of all ages. Prizes will be awarded for top runners by gender, age group, team and best Lion-themed costume.

Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m. All runners receive a free t-shirt while supplies last and raffle for prize baskets worth over $1,000. Pre-registration is available here.

The Lions 5K is made possible by its presenting sponsor The Village Bank, as well as lead sponsors Coldwell Banker Realty, The Eagle Leasing Company, Wegmans, Youngblood Builders, the Abbiati-Collins family, the Genser family, and others.

“It’s exciting to see the Newton community and other area runners come out for this fun event in support of Newton South,” Patricia Gonzalez, athletic director of Newton South High School, said in a statement. “Together with the Booster Club we are also very appreciative of the generous support we’ve received from local businesses and donors. Sports and school spirit are powerful contributors to a positive high school experience for kids. This event and the backing it has received help make the Booster Club’s support of Newton South athletics and the high school itself possible.”

The Newton South Booster Club supports the athletes, coaches, teams and athletic department of Newton South High School through fundraising and spirit-building initiatives. Newton South High School fields over 55 sports teams with many competing at the state and regional levels.

Newton South High School is one of two high schools in Newton and has more than 1,800 students with nearly 600 participating in sports throughout the school year.
