NEWTON, M — During FY 2023 budget deliberations on Monday, the Massachusetts House of Representatives inserted an amendment that would direct UMass Amherst to consider a life sciences center for the Mount Ida Campus in Newton, reported State House News.

Consolidated Amendment “A” was adopted 156-0 and would require the university to study the “the feasibility of establishing a Massachusetts school of health sciences education and center for health care workforce innovation" at the Mount Ida Campus in Newton.

The amendment, which adds an additional $7.3 million in spending to the $49.6 billion budget bill, deals with education, local aid, social services, veterans' services, and soldiers' homes proposals. It also includes $500,000 for a new Genocide Education Trust Fund line item.
