NEWTON, MA — Local leaders led by Gov. Maura Healey gathered at City Hall Monday to announce major renovations to the Newtonville MBTA Commuter Rail Station.

The $50 million project is slated to include two new elevators and two fully accessible high-level platforms. Construction will begin in 2026.

“This is a big deal,” Healey said. “This is going to be modern, it’s going to be user-friendly, and it’s going to be accessible. We’re going to go from one platform that is accessible only by stairways, to two fully-accessible level-boarding platforms on each side of the tracks.”

Healey thanked every individual and organization involved in securing the state and federal MBTA funding to get the project underway, including Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, Newton City Council members, U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D, MA), MBTA General Manager Phil Eng, and more.

“There are days when dreams come true, hard stuff gets done, and permanent, positive change is made. This is one of those days,” Fuller said about the project’s announcement.

Auchincloss took to the podium to give Healey credit for her leadership and surrounding herself with other like-minded people.

“Personell is policy. At a time when I’m in Washington watching our Federal Cabinet picks become a reality TV show, it is so refreshing to watch the Governor here in Massachusetts surround herself with people who care about public service,” Auchincloss said.

Other upgrades the station is scheduled to receive as part of the project include benches, canopies, bicycle racks, informational signage, CCTV cameras, and overall track, signal, and lighting updates.
