Traffic Change Made To Newton Road
An important road in town has been made one-way temporarily.

NEWTON, MA — A well-known and highly-used road in the vicinity of Newton North High School is now one-way as part of a temporary trial.
Elm Road is now one-way heading westbound from Walnut Street toward Lowell Avenue. With this new traffic pattern, no vehicle can enter Elm Road from Lowell Avenue and in turn cannot exit Elm Road onto Walnut Street.
The school district’s Director of Planning, Project Management, and Sustainability Stephanie Gilman and Director of Transportation Regina Moody worked with the Department of Public Works and police to evaluate the issues the current traffic composition posed and develop the temporary change.

The trial also features bike lanes on Elm Street similar to the ones on Walnut Street.
“The goals of the trial are to provide a simpler circulation pattern to improve safety for all users, and to minimize conflicts on adjacent roads,” Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said. “We will continue to make adjustments and gather feedback to create the best possible, and most importantly safest, traffic flow on this busy road next to Newton North High School and the very active fields.”
