gThe 8th Annual Tree Lighting Festivities were held on Sunday, December 7th, at the Fore River Rotary from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Despite the cold and clear night, the event drew a significant crowd that packed a good portion of the Rotary under a massive, brightly decorated tent.
✨ Highlights of the Evening
- Decorations & Treats: The tent was decked out with holiday lights, and tables were full of jingle bells and lighted holiday necklaces to be handed out.
- Refreshments: Attendees enjoyed Hot Chocolate and Whip Cream generously provided by Coffee Break, as well as Hot Pizzas donated by Alumni on Washington Street.
- Live Entertainment: The crowd was treated to a wonderful entertainment bonus by Brendan Ryan, who provided live holiday music.
- Opening Prayer: The evening officially kicked off with a prayer given by Reverend Kimberly J. Murphy from Quincy Point Congregational Church.
🌟 A Cherished Tradition
The festivities were kicked off by Ward 2 City Councilor RICHARD ASH, who carries on this yearly tradition in honor of his Grandmother Chickie. The event was originally started by former Ward 2 City Councilor Brad Croall. This annual gathering has grown exponentially, with this year being no exception, drawing families with children, friends, and many long-time residents who brought their family members.
💡 The Tree Lighting Moment
When it was time to illuminate the 30-foot tree, Councilor Richard Ash announced that a very special guest would do the honors: Frank Scolaro, a 92-year-old family patriarch and lifelong resident. As his family gathered around him, Mr. Scolaro hit the switch!

- Safety First: Before crossing the Rotary, one of the Quincy Police Officers kindly held up traffic coming over the bridge, allowing everyone to cross safely and gather on the center island.
- The Big Reveal: Following a countdown, the tree shone brightly and colorfully, marking another beautiful beginning to Quincy’s Holiday Season!
🙏 Special Thanks
Instrumental to the success of the evening were the dedicated employees of the Department of Natural Resources, Paul Cedroneand Colm Murphy, who ensured the lights, tables, chairs, and more were ready.
As the Christmas Season continues, we reflect on how blessed we all are to have dedicated City Officials and proud Quincy Residents who keep this and all other traditions alive for years to come!
