Quincy Woman Bilked Out Of $10K In Bitcoin Jury Duty Scam: Cops

The grifters claimed they were with the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office, police said.

QUINCY, MA — Grifters posing as police scammed a Quincy woman out of $10,000, according to the Norfolk County Sheriff's Office.

The woman arrived the sheriff's office facilty in Dedham on Monday morning and told personnel of a “summons for jury duty,” the sheriff's office posted on its Facebook page.

"No one from the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office or local police departments make calls demanding money or threatening arrest for things like 'missed jury duty' or 'outstanding warrants' — it does not happen," the post said.

Unfortunately for the Quincy woman, she was apparently unaware of this.

"When she was informed of scam calls like this, she said she had already transferred two payments of $5,000 at Bitcoin machines at a variety store in Quincy and at a Cumberland Farms store in Braintree," the post said.

"The victim has since filed a report with the Quincy Police Department," according to the post.

The sheriff's office reported an "increase in calls from people who have been contacted by scammers, who are looking to catch them off guard, by making these calls seem urgent and “arrests” imminent."

"You have the power to stop them," the sheriff's office said. "Slow down. Think clearly. Outsmart them. Put your phone down and hang up on them. If they call back, hang up on them again!"
