Green Initiatives In Shrewsbury Backed By $185K State Grant

The state's Green Communities Competitive Grant awarded funds to 27 communities recently.

SHREWSBURY, MA — Shrewsbury was among a handful of communities to receive funding recently through a state program that helps municipalities in Massachusetts make energy efficiency upgrades.

Shrewsbury will use the $185,000 grant from the state Department of Energy Resources' Green Communities program for a variety of initiatives, like buying LED lights, hybrid cars and installing electric vehicle charging stations.

The grant will also fund a program offering building operator certification training at the Donahue Rowing Center and Shrewsbury High School.

"These funds will help Shrewsbury meet the challenges posed by climate change, and support Shrewsbury's commitment to reducing the town's environmental impact," state Rep. Hannah Kane, R-Shrewsbury, said in a news release.

Shrewsbury has met the state's guidelines for being a "green community" for years, and has received three other awards from the program dating back to December 2018.
