Shrewsbury Library Announces Summer Reading Program Lineup

The 2016 summer reading program theme is “On Your Mark, Get Set…Read!”

The library is offering a number of free activities related to health and wellness for children and their families.

Pajama Storytime will be held July 11 at 6:30 p.m. Children are invited to wear their pajamas and bring a favorite stuffed friend or blanket. There will be a craft, stories, a snack, and a lullaby sing-a-long. This is a family event recommended for ages 2-5. Siblings are welcome to attend. Registration begins on June 27.

The Brain Gym Workshop is a two-part program offered on July 12 from 7-8:30 p.m., exclusive to parents, and July 19 from 7-8:30 p.m., open to parents and children. Brain Gym is a system that uses quick, easy-to-do developmental movements to stimulate brain function for learning. This event is open to school-age children and their families. Space is limited, and registration opens June 28. This two-part program will be presented by Fran Bruen, M.Ed, OTR/L, LMT, APT (AOBTA) and the Friends of the Shrewsbury Public Library.

A Teddy Bear Picnic will be held July 13 at 11 a.m. Participants will celebrate National Teddy Bear Day (July 10) with teddy bear-related stories and a craft. Children are invited to bring their favorite stuffed friend, picnic blanket and bagged lunch. This event is to be held in the Shrewsbury library children’s room courtyard and hosted by the Shrewsbury Children’s Connection. No registration is required to attend, but free admission tokens will be available at the circulation desk at 9 a.m.

The Experience the Book program will be held July 14 and July 28 as well as August 11 at 10 a.m. Participants will join librarian Sharon Martin for many kinds of fun exploring the theme of a book. The program is open to students entering grades 3-5. Tokens for this program will be available at the circulation desk at 9 a.m.

The Frisbee Freestyle Interactive Playshop with Todd Brodeur, world Freestyle Frisbee champion, will be held July 18 at 10 a.m. Participants will watch a demonstration and learn some cool Frisbee moves. The program is open to children at least 5 years of age. Registration begins on July 5.

Yoga Storytime will be held July 20 at 10 a.m. Attendees will listen to a story and recreate the action through yoga poses. This event is open to ages 3-8, and registration begins on July 6.

The library's Superhero Training Camp program takes place July 23 at 10 a.m. Children are invited to come dressed as their favorite superhero and improve their superhero skills at a number of training stations. The program will include D.I.Y. masks and capes, and snacks will be provided. This program is open to children at least 3 years of age, and registration begins on July 8.

A National Dance Day celebration will be held July 30 at 10 a.m. Members of the community are invited to see performances of different dance styles and learn some dancing moves. All ages are welcome to attend. Registration is available through the library website.
