Observing Veterans Day in Somerville
Observances include an annual ceremony and a talk about the Civil War.

Veterans Day is on Monday, and there are two ways to observe the holiday in Somerville.
Annual Ceremony
The city's annual ceremony starts at 10 a.m. Monday at the George Dilboy VFW Post 529, at 317 Summer St. in Davis Square, according to Jay Weaver, director of veterans services in Somerville.
The ceremony includes an honor guard, the laying of a wreath and speeches by local officials.
Somerville's Civil War POWs and Wreath Laying
Historic Somerville is presenting a talk called "Struggles Unceasing: 1864-65—The POW Experience of the Somerville Guard." A number of Somerville soldiers, for instance, were held at the notorious Confederate POW camp, Andersonville. The talk, by Newbury College's Professor Daniel Breen, starts at 2 p.m. at the Somerville Museum, 1 Westwood Rd. It costs $8 but is free for members of Historic Somerville.
After the talk, at 4 p.m., Historic Somerville will hold a wreath-laying ceremony at Somerville's Civil War monument, which is in the Milk Row Cemetery, 400 Somerville Ave., near Market Basket. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
