Somerville Households May See Discolored Water, Low Pressure

The fire department will begin its annual testing of fire hydrants this month, resulting in water that appears dirty or "rusty."

SOMERVILLE, MA — The Somerville Fire Department will begin its annual inspection of all fire hydrants from Monday, Aug. 23 to approximately Saturday, Sept. 4.

During this time, some households in Somerville may get water that appears dirty or discolored and see a reduction in pressure. The water does not pose a health hazard; however, residents are advised not to do laundry while water is discolored, as it could stain clothes.

Inspection requires the flushing of hydrants, as well as a check of their mechanical operation, which can disturb sediment in the water mains. This is what causes the discoloration, according to an announcement from the city.
