Somerville Streamlines Leasing For Small Businesses
The city announced the launch of a new handbook that is supposed to make the commercial leasing process easier.
SOMERVILLE, MA — The city held a virtual event Thursday night to celebrate and discuss the launch of a new commercial leasing handbook.
After being called upon by Somerville’s Small Business Anti-Displacement Task Force to develop the guide, the city worked with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council to do so.
According to the city, the new handbook includes legal basics, negotiation tips, permitting guidance, and input from 20 local small business owners, legal experts, and advocacy organizations.

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne admitted that the city’s lease terms have been confusing for business owners in the past.
“This Handbook is one way we’re giving our entrepreneurs the knowledge and power they need to succeed. And when our businesses succeed, our community succeeds: we get jobs, services, vibrant business districts, and tax revenues that fund the services and programs we deserve and need.”
