The snow emergency takes effect Thursday at 10 p.m.

The city of Somerville will declare a snow emergency in anticipation of a major snow storm expected to hit the area Friday and Saturday.

The city's official Facebook page posted the following early Thursday afternoon.

"Later today the City will declare a snow emergency and the start time as well as any closures will be announced via the City alert system (by phone, text, email), the City website, social media, and news outlets. We are waiting for midday forecasts to set the exact start time and will provide ample warning for you to move your cars after the work day. If you have not signed up for City alerts, please do so at www.somervillema.gov/cty."

When the snow emergency goes into effect, Somerville residents will have four hours to move their cars to the odd-numbered sides of streets or to designated snow-emergency parking lots.
