Everybody Knows That Vapin' Ain't Allowed In School

A reminder that e-cigarette smoking is not allowed on school property was issued this week. The discipline code was amended to reflect that.

SUDBURY, MA—In light of the increase in smoking e-cigarettes in the state, or "vaping," the Lincoln-Sudbury superintendent has issued a reminder that it's illegal to do so on school property.

Superintendent Bella Wong sent the following notice out to the school community:

Dear LS Parent/Guardians and Students,
I am writing to ensure you are aware that the use of e-cigarette or vape products has increased across the state among teenagers. LS students have reportedly been observed using these products. Massachusetts law prohibits the sale of electronic smoking devices to anyone younger than 18. Electronic Smoking Device means any product that can deliver nicotine to the user through inhalation of vapor. It also includes any component part of such product, including liquid for use in the device regardless of whether the liquid contains nicotine, whether or not sold separately, and does not include any product that has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for sale as a tobacco cessation product and is being marketed and sold solely for the approved purpose.

940 CMR 21.00 The LS Discipline Code has been amended, effective immediately with the addition of the following: VAPING POLICY: Vaping, or possession of any vaping materials or devices, is forbidden on school property or at any school-sponsored activities. Vapes emit a slight residual odor (often faintly sweet, not like cigarettes or marijuana) and come in a wide range of slim designs that slip easily into a pocket or bag. Some versions are designed to look like other common items, such as inhalers, computer pen drives, and even small gaming systems. A quick Internet search will provide pictures if you would like to investigate further.
The liquid being vaporized and inhaled is usually referred to as the 'juice' and comes in small containers and in a very wide array of flavors. Some are simply flavored liquid. However, many have nicotine and other addictive elements to them. The juice can be easily infused with THC, the key chemical in marijuana. Vaping is addictive, unhealthy, illegal, and, specifically, against school rules. I strongly encourage you to talk and share your concern with your children about the dangers of vaping and the problems that can occur from it.
Sincerely, Bella Wong
