WORCESTER, MA — State Sen. Michael Moore, D-Worcester, is one of seven state senators calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race to make way for a new nominee who they believe can defeat Donald Trump.

The senators released a joint letter Thursday, saying that Biden's chances of beating Trump are slim — and that another Trump term would be "catastrophic" for Massachusetts and the nation.

"Now is the time for him to pass the torch to the next generation of Democratic leaders," the letter said. "Most Americans, including the majority of Democrats, now believe that President Biden is not capable of vigorously campaigning and serving as president for another four years."

The letter was signed by Moore along with state Sens. Jo Comerford, D-Northampton, Jamie Eldridge, D-Sudbury, Paul Feeney, D-Foxborough, Pat Jehlen, D-Medford, John Keenan, D-Quincy, and Jason Lewis, D-Melrose.

The letter comes as a new Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll shows that about two-thirds of Democrats in Massachusetts want a new candidate. The poll also showed that Trump's support in Massachusetts increased, closing the gap between him and Biden to 18 points compared to 30 points in April.

The letter also follows a flurry of reports Thursday that Biden might step aside as soon as this weekend under pressure from prominent democrats like Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama and Chuck Schumer. Biden was also diagnosed Wednesday with COVID-19, hindering his campaigning schedule.
