Sudbury Police Station Lights Up In Purple

The police station is lighted purple in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

SUDBURY, MA—If you've noticed that the Sudbury police station, along with other buildings in the area, is bathed in purple light: here's why: The Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable is lighting buildings in purple in recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in support of violence prevention.

Purple is known to the color of courage, survival, honor and hope. According to statistics, three to four women are killed - largely by boys and men - every day in the United States. Thirteen women were killed in that way in Massachusetts within the past year.

"We as a nation ended monarchy and slavery," wrote Sudbury police on its Facebook page. "We gave women their due right to vote. We improved civil rights and integrated our schools. Together we can prevent this violence. 12 faith and civic buildings have supported the efforts this year by being lit in purple. Domestic violence affects all communities including Sudbury. The Sudbury Police Department is proud to partake in bringing awareness to others."
